So, many photographers ask me- which is best?
I shoot with my Sony Alpha 7 series mirrorless and the sharpness of the camera is best captured with a prime lens. This means the lens will be manually adjusted by you to be in focus, although there are AF modes also available. The clarity of these lenses is superior to a zoom as they are fixed at a certain focal length and distance. I keep a 45 m/1,8 for example for portraits to capture clarity in my subjects. However, for a kit lease, a zoom lens is versatile and allows you to keep one lens on for travel or hobby photography, adjusting to the demands of the scene, but reduces the sharpness of the shot. I recommend having a good 24-105/f 1.8-2.8, or a good 12-24 zoom, and a 24-70, and an extended zoom range lens as well as a 45 m, and 85 m prime for more sharp subjects.
