New Baby? Maternity Shoot Ideas? Read on for Photo Shoot Secrets!

So, congratulations to all new parents out there! Now your little bundle of joy is here, or almost, how can you capture all those cute giggles, smiles, and first time cute moves he or she is doing or will be doing?

1. Be prepared to have imperfect photos- capture life as it is, and you will look back on this time, remembering the crazy moments fondly, and not looking at the messy changing table or the fact that baby had spaghetti on his chin. Remember- some pictures are meant to simply capture the moment- you are making memories first and foremost! Tip one- always have a camera on you- even if its your cell!

2. We all know that ideally a proper 'photo shoot' is preferred, so here is my photographer advice. Babies are on their own time and you need to be patient and willing to take days to get this done, especially if you are their parent and have that luxury. It could go perfectly or it could be a bad day for pictures. In my sessions, I always devote 4 hours to a newborn shoot for these exact reasons. Go ahead and choose a quiet time after feeding, when baby is sleepy and going down for a nap. This works best with newborns until about the age 8 weeks old, as after that they become more squirmy. Set up a backdrop of a neutral blanket on the couch and cover a series of support / prop pillows or a Boppy style breast-feeding pillow to position baby on. Capture all the cutest looks in this short window of angelic baby sleep- lay out all your chosen outfits, headpieces, accessories, etc. and any props, like rose petals, within arms reach! Remember, never leave baby unattended.

3. MATERNITY SHOOT NOTES- I always recommend a shoot for expecting moms between 28-34 weeks. This will give you a nice huggable bump, and hopefully avoid the possibility of an early delivery and missing the beautiful opportunity of the 'baby bump' shoot. As always, my suggestion is to aim to do your photo shoot in nature, or a forest, or anything involving landscape in the morning hours or twilight hours.
